The story
Fred Rose drew each country of Europe as a fisherman, holding a sack of its imperial catch or about to lose what it has caught. It is a serio-comic map, the form he made his own, and it works like a political cartoon: national attitudes become people and animals, and the fishing is an allegory for European meddling far from home. A key map of Europe in an inset lets the reader check who is who. Rose's octopus map of 1877 is already in this collection, and this is the same hand twenty years on, still angry and still funny.

- If it arrives less than perfect, we reprint or refund — your choice.
Why our maps cost more than a poster: we print from the highest-resolution scans in existence, at sizes where the engraving itself becomes visible — the sea monsters, the tiny place-names, the burin lines — on matte paper that holds every line without glare.
